Despite Woody Allen’s status as one of Hollywood’s most controversial figures, sparking outrage after entering a relationship with his ex-partner Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, in the 1990s and facing allegations of sexual abuse from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, the director has found a horde of new allies in a handful of Red Scare fans.
Though his latest film, Coup de Chance may have made waves at this past weekend’s Venice Film Festival, the filmmaker found himself in hot water after defending Spanish soccer boss Luis Rubiales for giving a player an unwanted kiss and denouncing cancel culture as “silly.”

“I don’t know what it means to be canceled,” he told Variety. “I know that over the years everything has been the same for me.”
As Allen began facing backlash for these remarks on social media — “need twitter to survive at least until he dies so we can all celebrate together,” joked @acechhh of his most recent controversy — several Red Scare fans headed to Reddit to defend the director in r/redscarepod’s latest thread on the disgraced star.
“He did nothing wrong,” wrote u/xochitlhorror before arguing in favor of Allen’s marriage to Previn in a subsequent comment.
“She was Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, and Woody hardly interacted with her when she was a kid. And they've been happily together for over 30 years now, chill,” they continued. “If it was an abusive relationship in any way something would have come out by now, don't you think?”
“We are so back,” added u/criebhabie2, as u/Flakko333 dubbed the director "innocent."
Yet not everyone was sold on absolving Allen, several firing back against those standing up for the disgraced director.
“Marrying your adopted daughter is nasty af lol,” wrote u/TaintGrinder, describing Allen as being “definitely a sex pest at best.” “If you're okay with that, then go for it I guess.”
“I don't know if he's guilty of the most severe accusations, but he's pretty much confirmed to have pursued teenage girls and he was close friends with Epstein,” wrote OP, u/CountPierre, referencing Allen’s alleged friendship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
“My Woody Allen hot take is that he is both unfairly maligned and over-rated, sometimes by the same people,” wrote u/WarmCartoonist.
So whether you love Woody Allen or hate him, one thing is certain — this collab is absolutely Bananas.
